This week in math, we did a check-in with fractions, students should be able to convert between an improper fraction and a mixed number and be able to compare different forms of fractions by converting to an equivalent fraction with common denominators. We also started ratios. Students should understand what a ratio is and be able to determine between part to whole and part to part ratios. We had a fun scavenger hunt around the school to practice writing ratios.
This week in science, we have continued our study with control surfaces on airplanes. Students should understand the movements of pitch, yaw and roll and be able to describe what parts of the plane are responsible for allowing these movements to occur. Moving forward, we are starting to look at adaptations birds have to allow them to fly and how they compare to the parts of a plane!
This week in math we have continued to compare fractions. Students practiced finding common denominators and changed the fractions to equivalent fractions in order to compare them. We also practiced this with equivalent fractions bingo and fractions war. Monday will be a check-in on comparing fractions.
In science we have been looking at the parts of an airplane and students should be able to describe the control surfaces and which parts are responsible for allowing a plane to make these movements. REMINDER: No school Thursday, Friday, or Monday! See you on Tuesday! In Humanities this week, we have worked diligently to finish our Island of the Blue Dolphins comic strips. As always, we have been watching our friend Carl Azuz on CNN 10 and keeping track of current events. We have also completed some Valentines themed puzzles and writing activities. Next week we will start wrapping up Provincial Government and keep reading through our novel study! This week in math we have been comparing fractions. We are able to convert from a mixed number to an improper fraction to help us compare fractions easier. We have been working on finding a common denominator to make comparing even easier. Students are in the process of representing comparisons of fractions on number lines.
This week in science we have been looking at the four forces that act on an object in flight. Students should be able to describe these forces and how we can use them to increase speed and height of a flying object. Congratulations to those students chosen to represent Nose Creek at the Calgary Youth Science Fair! In Humanities, we continue to work through our novel study, Island of the Blue Dolphins. We have also started taking a closer look at the Provincial Government. Students have been working on visual note sheets to help solidify their understanding of the Alberta Provincial Government. We watched an episode of Arthur to learn about voting, completing a viewing guide to go along with it. Students started work on a comic strip to show their understanding of Island of the Blue Dolphins so far. |
