This week in Math we continued to work on comparing prime and composite numbers. Students should understand that a product with two factors will be a prime number and a product with more than two factors will be composite. Next week we will be looking at problem solving using factors.
This week in Science we finished our research on Alberta trees and students shared with their groups their trees of Alberta. Students discussed many trees native to Alberta and also found out about a few that were introduced to the province. Students should be able to describe at least two trees in detail possibly using needle/leaf, habitat, deciduous/coniferous, leaf arrangement, fruit/cone etc. In Humanities, we have taken the plunge into the three branches of Canadian government. Students have been learning about the responsibilities of each level of government, who the elected representatives are and what they do, and what rights, responsibilities, and freedoms we have as Canadian citizens. On Thursday, councillor Jyoti Gondek gave an incredible presentation to the grade 6 classes. Students have so been busy finishing their Parts of Speech menus that we were unable to get to our weekly word work. This means that next week will be a double feature with a test and new words on Monday! This week in Math we reviewed multiples with a practice puzzle. We also started factors and different methods in finding our factors of products. Students should know the difference between prime and composite factors. We practiced this with tree factorization helping us find prime factors from a product. The factor trees worksheet is due for Monday Oct 22.
This week in Science we carried on with learning about tree cookies. Students should be able to use observations and inferences to identify the growth of a tree and any environmental conditions by looking at the tree cookies. The tree cookies observations and explanations practice was due today Oct 19th. We also discussed the difference between native and introduced trees in Alberta. Students are currently researching native trees of Alberta. In Humanities we began looking at "Who Does What?" in Canadian politics. We watched a video with a catchy song that outlines the different levels of Canadian government. We also completed our mapping review. On the ELA side of things, students had a Parts of Speech review class, followed by a Parts of Speech Menu project. We ended the week by typing up the menus and working on the covers. There was a PoS quiz on Friday. Next week will have a strong focus on Social Studies. Next Week Word Work
This week in Math we started multiples. Students are working on finding multiples of numbers less than 100. We were able to practice finding multiples and the least common multiples of pairs of numbers. Along with multiples we also practiced multiplication by multiplying 2 digit numbers.
In Science this week we have been working on our visual assignment for the levels of the forest. Students are creating a visual of a forest of choice and they are including the four levels and living and non-living components they can find in each level of their forest. These visual assignments are due on Tuesday, Oct 9th. |
