This week in Math, we have been looking at the order of operations. Students should understand why we have an order that we have to follow and what that order is! We have been practicing evaluating different expressions using PEMDAS or BEDMAS.
This week in Science, students have had time to work on their forest and trees issues research project. These were due on Friday, Nov 30th. They should be shared with [email protected]. Students also were given a final review for the Trees and Forests final test that is on Wednesday, Dec 5th. Check out the extra resources for further study help In Humanities this week we finished up our Pokemon descriptive writing activities. Students also had a reading comprehension practice booklet that is due on Monday. It was homework if they did not finish in class! On Friday, we had a visit from our MP for Calgary Centre, Kent Hehr. He gave a presentation on his role in government, the importance of rules and governance, and some of the ways governments help citizens. Our goal is to wrap up the municipal and provincial government chapters before Christmas Break! Happy Long Weekend to students! As a reminder, we have Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday and Friday this week. We look forward to meeting you all! The Scholastic Book Fair will be open for all of PT Conferences in the Learning Commons. In Humanities this week we have focused on finishing up our maps of Canada. We have also started a descriptive writing project around creating a Pokemon character! Our final Animation Studio sessions are next week, so we have been busy preparing for those as well. In Math we introduced the order of operations. We looked at context questions as a introduction and students came to the conclusion that we need to multiply first! We have been using the acronym BEDMAS of PEMDAS. Ask them to tell you what it means! In Science we have been working on our Forests Issues Research project. Students chose an issue that they wanted to research and are looking at the big issue that it creates in our forest ecosystems. They should be including perspectives of both sides, determining their own perspective on the issue and what we can do about helping the issue. These projects are due on Friday Nov 30th. Make sure to share them with [email protected] This week in Math we have been finishing up with multiples and factors and reviewing our long division. Students did a mental math strategies check-in. The multiples, factors and multiplication quiz is on Monday, Nov 19th. Make sure to review! This week in Science students were working in groups to compete the cycles project. Students had to include how the cycles work and how they contribute to a healthy forest. These projects were due today (Friday Nov 16th). We started introducing some issues we see in forests around the world. Students will soon be choosing their own topic about a current issue we face in our forests. In Humanities, we have been doing a thorough review of mapping. Currently, students are working on labelling a map of Canada with major cities and bodies of water. Over the week, we have been following the Olympic plebiscite. We held our own mock-mini plebiscite where students had an opportunity to read and watch a variety of news stories to better inform their understanding of the plebiscite. After the vote, our grade 6 classes voted "no" to the 2026 Calgary Olympics. Both 6C and 6D also had their first animation session. Students had an opportunity to practice with the Quickdraw Animation Society. Students will have a second session to produce their own stories through animation! This week in Math we took a look at our factor problem solving stations. We also started reviewing long division. Students should be able to follow the steps for long division: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down and repeat or remainder. Have them show you each step!
This week in Science our Ecosystems project was due (Friday, Nov 9). Students had time to be working on their ecosystems vocabulary and drawings. We also introduced the nutrient cycle and water cycle and how each work. We are currently under research for how these systems along with photosynthesis contribute to a healthy forest! This week in Math we have been looking at problem solving with factors and how we would use them in our everyday lives. Students worked through stations that involved problem solving using factors. These stations are due on Monday, Nov 5th. Stations are on the blog under Math Resources.
In Science students have been doing research to identify the key terms in an ecosystem. Students should have their vocabulary complete and an example for each term. They are now creating their own ecosystem drawings in their visual journals making sure to include all the provided terms and making connections for the food chains and food web in their ecosystem. |
