This week in Math we continued to review place value with our problem of the week and with place value Yahtzee. We worked on the population assignment in which students had to create their own countries, assign each a population and write those populations in word form and expanded form. These assignments are due on Monday, Oct 1st. We also reviewed rounding and incorporated it into our practice for place value with a puzzle. Friday we had our place value check-in to make sure everyone is understanding the unit so far!
This week in Science we were able to get outside and gather leaves for classification. We went over the difference between deciduous and coniferous trees and students created a Venn diagram with the differences and similarities. These Venn diagrams are due on Monday, Oct 1. Students also had the chance to classify different leaves we found outside using our main characteristics for classification. These included the blade shape, apex, base, veins, margins and arrangement. In Humanities we began looking more closely at the pillars of democracy. Students had the last two weeks to research and explore other types of government to prepare for the unit on democracy we have now started. We delved into the Parliament of Canada website to start an introductory journey into Canadian democracy. We started some reading comprehension to get a grade 6 feel for things. Next Week's Word Work Oct 1 – 5 – Words with Silent Letters
This week in Math we did some review of place value with a few games, practice worksheets and puzzles. We worked on writing numbers in standard form, expanded form and word form. There will be a place value check-in next Friday Sept 28th!
This week in Science we learned a bit more on the individual parts of a tree through the secret life of trees interactive website. Students should have received the parts of a tree hand out with more information on the three main parts of a tree (crown, trunk and roots). Next week we will hopefully be able to go outside and do a visual assignment of the different levels of the forest! This week we have begun our year in Math with a few review games of basic facts and operations. We also started our first week with a Number Concepts Unit (place value). Students will learn to represent and describe numbers greater than one million (pictorially and symbolically), as well as solving problems involving whole and decimal numbers. Students were introduced to the problem of the week and were given a checklist of strategies to use when problem solving.
This week in Science we started the Trees and Forests Unit. Students learned why trees and forests are so important and are able to identify characteristics that distinguish trees from other plants. We also discussed the agents of change to a forest and examined why forests are not all the same. Next week we will be looking at the different levels of the forest and going outside to do a visual assignment! In Humanities this week we completed out first Word Work test, focusing on spelling at grade level words. We also started planning and writing short stories after a brief review of plot and introduction elements. Students were given their list of Word Work words for next week. Next week we will begin our emphasis on the Social Studies side of Humanities with a look into the roots of democracy. |
